Crafted by the 7 Mindsets curriculum team, this blog post and its accompanying video blog delve into the transformative redesign of our high school curriculum.

Putting Students at the Forefront of Curriculum Development

7 Mindsets is thrilled to launch a completely redesigned High School Curriculum for the 2024-2025 school year. In redesigning the curriculum, 7 Mindsets centered the learning experience around the true experts: the students themselves. We really wanted to put students at the forefront of the creation, establishing various metrics to ensure their voices were not just heard but were a driving force in the development process. To achieve this, 7 Mindsets introduced a For Students-by-Students communication opportunity providing a space for students to share with us directly their insights, desires, and feedback on what they wanted to see from a redesigned 7 Mindsets program.

A Holistic Approach to Curriculum Development

Curriculum developers with varied educational experiences revamped the courses using a holistic approach. This strategic move was completed by delving into research aimed at identifying gaps within existing curricula. Our goal was ambitious yet clear: to design an all-encompassing curriculum that integrates the 7 Mindsets core curriculum, College and Career Readiness, and 21st Century Frameworks, creating a seamless and comprehensive educational experience. We are proud to say, after this meticulous process, we believe we have achieved exactly that.

Student-Centric Learning in Action

During our research, we went out into the field to test the content and see how it landed with our students. As we tested out the redesigned curriculum across various demographics, markets, and states, we received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Students expressed their appreciation for seeing their own stories and experiences reflected in the lessons, which developed a sense of belonging and validation. The approach to having students in the driver’s seat allowed them to engage in meaningful self-reflection and discussions regarding their aspirations and values, instead of just learning about folks deemed successful. The opportunity to see themselves in the curriculum not only boosted their confidence but also made the learning experience more relevant and engaging; Students were able to connect to the material on a personal level.

Empowering Educators Through Student-Driven Discussions

From the educators’ perspective, the revamped curriculum was a breath of fresh air. Teachers observed their students engage and participate fully, attributing this change to the curriculum’s emphasis on student voices and experiences. The shift towards student-driven discussions facilitated an environment where free thought and open dialogue flourished. Educators appreciated the way the curriculum encouraged students to articulate their own desires and values, deepening the understanding of each student’s unique perspective and allowing them to see what other conversations they could be having with their students.

Preparing Students for Life Beyond High School

Looking towards the future, the redesigned curriculum addressed the critical questions of “life after high school.” Recognizing the diversity of post-secondary experiences, it was crafted to allow students to explore their passions and begin laying the groundwork for their future endeavors. By integrating real-world applications and forward-thinking strategies, it encourages students to think beyond traditional academic achievements. Instead of being haunted by the question “What will I be doing after high school?” Students can explore their next stages in life and careers. This new curriculum allows students to understand that their actions and decisions today will have an impact on their future, allowing them to be proactive about their steps toward their dreams and aspirations.
